FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Litto's classroom raised $1,520

This project is fully funded

My students are 17-21 years old in an alternative school. This is their last chance to get a high school diploma. These kids come from the most horrible situations you can imagine. They are sexually abused, beaten with metal pipes, live with 30 people in one apartment who smoke , drink, and party all day and night. My students are often the only caretaker of parents who are dying of cancer or addicted to crack or alcohol. Many students have been or are homeless or live in foster homes that lock them out during the day. The one strength I can give them as their art teacher is the ability to see beauty, in spite of their surroundings. The ability to see the beauty in the texture of a torn billboard, to notice the fine carvings on old buildings, the color of a friends skin...this ability to see beauty in everyday surroundings gives a child a strength to lift themselves up and above their immediate surroundings and to look toward a better future. To teach my students this life skill I would like to introduce them to a photography program where we go into the neighborhood of bed-stuy and photograph the beauty they can find there. By using the camera they would have to focus and think about what beauty means to them and to document and share their photos with others. They will be using photography as a tool for seeing deeply and then sharing these photos with others in an exhibition. I know that these very needy students would build their strengths to deal with life and see beauty that will strengthen them and give them hope for the rest of their lives. To run this program we would need a slr digital camera with a macro lens as our basic camera and then basic digital cameras for each child which I will address in a separate proposal. Thank you for taking the time reading our proposal.
