Have you ever watched how a tiny seed sprouted and grew into a beautiful plant? I teach 6th grade science at a Title 1 school which has a diverse population, most of which are from minority families.

One activity which my students really enjoy and which I believe will enhance their learning experience of scientific processes is planting. Observing how a plant sprout from a seed, watching it grow everyday, bear flowers and fruits and then eventually die is a fascinating experience for an 11 or 12-year old student who has lived in an apartment building all her life. I could see the amazement on their faces when on Monday morning, they found out that the seed they have taken cared of has finally sprouted. Students’ curiosity were aroused as they observe the little plants grow. They are very good subjects for controlled experiments which I encourage my students to design on their own. I teach four groups of students and they all use the window sill to put their pots on. Our school has no yard. Even if I let my students plant in groups of threes, there wouldn't be enough space to put their pots on. They get rotten in the winter months so we usually plant at the beginning of the school year (late summer or early fall) or towards the end (spring) where they don’t have enough time to really work on improving their experimental design or do iterations.

Purchasing a Grow Lab would really help my students do a long-term investigation on plants. The Grow Lab will help them learn to design their own controlled experiments and discover things on their own which in some cases would take time and a lot of iterations.

By funding my request, you will make a difference in the way students have done their experiments in the past. The frustration of not being able to continue with their experiments because of rotting and weather conditions will be eliminated. They can continue to work on their projects and make adjustments even during the winter months and have enough time to analyze and interpret results even before the year ends.
