Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

See the LIGHT of Leaning

Natural light is a powerful asset in a learning environment.

Studies have shown that exposure to natural light can improve mood, increase alertness, and enhance cognitive performance. This not only helps students stay focused and engaged but also promotes a positive and energetic learning experience.

Our aging building is currently facing several challenges due to its dilapidated state. As part of an overall plan to combat these conditions, maintaining a clean and well-repaired classroom is crucial. Through other projects and my own funding, I have already added industrial fans, repaired woodwork, and trellised vines of pothos and philodenrons to provide a green canopy ceiling and added 15+ floor and shelf plants to improve overall air quality. Our massive wall of windows benefits these plants, but the glare can be overpowing as we do not have very effective window covers. Window coverings can help diffuse strong light and create a mellow ambiance for learning. They help to regulate temperature (our heat flows in summer, AC cools all winter...), to reduce glare on our old whiteboard, and emit a relaxed and harmonious aesthetic through color.

It is essential that students feel comfortable in their classroom. A well-lit, clean, and aesthetically pleasing environment can significantly impact their ability to concentrate and absorb information. Light coverings on windows play a key role in achieving this by promoting a sense of well-being. A bright and cheerful classroom can boost students' morale and make them feel more at ease.

In conclusion, light coverings on windows are a valuable addition to our classroom. They enhance the learning experience by leveraging natural light, improve the overall conditions of our building, and contribute to a comfortable and welcoming environment for our students.
