My Students

I teach middle school students with Autism and other intellectual disabilities. As they are getting older, it has been essential making sure that they acquire the necessary skills to become more independent and successful.

The "Hawk Nest Cafe" cart has become an amazing asset to our classroom.

Students have the opportunity to apply for weekly jobs and then practice their socialization, communication, and money skills! Students have distinct roles in our business based on their strengths and areas they need support in. Along with the Autistic Support Teacher, the speech therapist and occupational therapist join us in making our business a success. We've implemented different strategies in order to maximize the benefits for each students working our cafe cart.

My Project

With the help of your funding, cafe cart items will be delivered to us! Students will then have the opportunity to inventory the items, stock our cart, and start selling! While some students will use their verbal communication skills to converse with adults and students in our building. Students who need more support will use visual scripts and an iPad to communicate.

Each day, students put on their aprons, gather their supplies, and run the cafe cart!

This is an exciting and effective opportunity for them to practice their language skills. They are building positive relationships with people outside of our classroom and learning how to handle money.

Students with autism need a variety of real-world opportunities in order to help them generalize classroom skills beyond our four walls. Each student takes pride in their job and feels an incredible sense of accomplishment when their "shift" is finished.
