My Students

When I tell people that I teach high school physics, the first thing they usually say to me is "That was the hardest class I took in high school." Many of my students come into my class worried about whether they can succeed in physics, and I want to show them that physics is accessible and fun.

I teach high school physics to students who are in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.

I teach at a school where almost 70% of students are on free or reduced lunch. There is one computer lab and one classroom set of laptops for the entire school of 1600 students. While every classroom has a traditional overhead projector, my students are much more responsive to more modern technology. Although my students have a strong drive to succeed, they lack the resources and experiences to become fully engaged in their studies, particularly in science. Because of the wide range of ability levels and interests, it is important for me to make instruction fun and relevant to my students, and using technology helps me to achieve that goal.

My Project

Having an LCD projector in my classroom would allow me to show my students the laws of physics in settings other than the classroom, to give them insight into technologies that apply the concepts they are learning about, and give my tech-savvy students more access to material that they otherwise find very difficult. It would be possible for me to use instructional videos for my students who are struggling to grasp the concepts we cover, to use interactive quizzes to assess my students and get immediate feedback about their understanding, and to challenge my honors students by allowing them to present their research projects to the whole class. By seeing real-world examples of physics in action, my students will be better able to connect their work in the classroom to their daily lives and become more engaged and inquiring scientists.

In addition to giving my students access to the broad world of physics, your donation will allow students to present the results of their scientific investigations to their peers.

By providing students with the opportunity to view applications of physics and to formally present their scientific investigations, your donation could inspire students to pursue new-found passions for scientific exploration outside the classroom and beyond their time in high school.
