Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine yourself traveling abroad, landing on the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica, and wanting to order some food. The place you stop by to get a bite to eat has a very friendly and welcoming owner, but they only speak Spanish. Lucky for you, you remember the teachings you received from your high school Spanish teacher and are able to order a nice meal no problem, even make some small talk with the owner despite not being fluent! Although our school is nestled near the Long Beach Port in Los Angeles, a place known for a large Hispanic population, many of my students are not fluent speakers and some come from families with no Hispanic roots. What I love about my students is that even though they may not be fluent or understand every concept the first time, I see their enthusiasm to learn everyday when they log into class and start by greeting me in Spanish: “Hola Señora Fuentes!” and admire their perseverance when I see their hands go up on the screen time and time again to answer questions even if they might be wrong.

My Project

The product selected will allow for one screen to be used to display and interact with the course material, and the other to view and interact with my students. It will allow my students to have the opportunity to lower their anxiety level of not being selected to participate or to ask a question when they need clarification because they can not be seen as soon as their hand goes up because of the limited visual in one screen. They deserve all the support they can and having the second screen will definitely provide that.
