This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help us see, listen, play, write and learn. Ours is a special needs classroom. We are 10 students in all, and expecting two more soon. The majority of them are autistic or fall under the Autism Spectrum. They are very attuned to video and audio navigating, and we have prepared personalized videos for them to see, listen and learn basic skills.

We use many forms of activity books, and writing surfaces to achieve our academic and socio-emotional objectives.

We use 5-6 page activity books, lined and blank white boards, posters, dotted names, shapes, letters, shapes, dot to dot, tracing and free writing surfaces like the classroom white board, and surfaces that require them to write in the vertical plain, all while singing, chanting and sharing. Many of the activities can be performed solo and or with classmates. The DVD players make all of this possible as they are both easy to operate and easy to share.

Many of the activities require active participation, to include writing and drawing. When using the dry erase method, they must also clean up when done. Some of the activities done in crayon are kept for portfolios. Our students really enjoy them and it breeds independence and self reliance. Once again, the DVD players are at the center of it all.

The best fit for the use of the portable DVD players are literacy and language, math, and science and social studies, almost exactly in that order. Often, much writing is required that results great fine motor skills development. There are also many recorded A,B,C,D level readers that are read ad infinitum.
