My Students

An amazing group, my third/fourth grade children are high-need, special education students: three-quarters of the class are English Language Learners (ELL).

Engaged and eager to study, their disabilities make learning, particularly reading, a real challenge.

My students are low-income and receive free lunch. My parents are wonderful and supportive, but are unable to contribute financially to our classroom.

My Project

Reading creates readers, but the challenge is to get my reluctant readers to spend adequate time with their books. For my students, reading is so labored, they do not enjoy reading. I hope to create a classroom audio library that would give my students the opportunity to spend time with books and experience reading in a fun and stress free way. Most importantly, audio books allow struggling readers to experience success.

The more models of fluent reading they experience the more opportunity they have to reach their goals.

Audio books increase vocabulary, sight-word recognition, and comprehension skills.
