My Project
The beginning of the year holds a lot of opportunity to start off the year on the right foot. I want students to start the school year being able to understand one another and see the world through others' eyes. I create a first week of school classroom transformation: Secret Mission: Caring and Compassion.
Students should be given opportunities to understand others and their problems to be able to put themselves in a place to be caring and compassionate towards others.
This project starts off with two books: A Teachers Secret Confidential series. Students will learn through these two books and the other books about different situations people can be in or go through. After reading the books, I will set out secret mission envelopes with secret spy pens and notebooks. Students will be given a mission for the school year: to find those who need an extra pat on the back or hug. Students will then go to our secret mission box and pull out a card and envelope. Students will use the scented markers to make a card for the friend or family member or adult or whoever needs a little lifting up.
I've done a project similar to this for years and its amazing to see how long students remember this lesson and continuously throughout the year recognize how they can be compassionate towards others, no matter what is going on in their lives. The way we will measure the success of students' understanding is seeing if their behavior throughout the year recognizes others' need for something: whether it is a smile, a hug, a card, etc. One of my favorite parts of this project: students will get to wear the secret agent jacket when they are showing compassion!
