My Students

Students learn best by doing as well as seeing concrete examples. In second grade, two core concepts in math are addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Many of my students need visual examples and to manipulate in order to understand this concept fully. The resources I have requested will allow that.

I teach second grade in Tennessee.

This is only my second year in second grade. My school is a Title I, urban public school. Most of my students come from poverty or homes that are just making ends meet. This year I have a group of very sweet, energetic second graders. My parents are very supportive and are doing what they can to help their children be successful in school. My students are very eager to learn and love to learn by doing, They are excited to learn and try new things. The more experiences I can provide for them, the better.

My Project

I have requested math manipulatives, models, and centers to help reinforce and teach addition and subtraction skills with and without regrouping. My students will use these resources in many different ways. The manipulative will be used as a whole class, in small groups, and for individual instruction to reinforce the concepts of addition and subtraction. The centers will be used both in small groups and as independent learning activities for enrichment and reinforcement, based on what each child needs. All of the resources will be used regularly in the classroom to maintain proficiency with these math skills.

These resources allow students to see often abstract and challenging concepts of addition and subtraction using concrete examples and manipulatives.

Students will be able to make connections to prior knowledge more easily by using the visual tools and apply their understanding in the centers for extended practice. The activities are engaging, age appropriate, and will help me reach my students who struggle with this concept in a new way.
