Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Do you have any Pete the Cat books, Mrs. S?" "I love Kevin Henkes. I want to read more books by him!" Those are some things you'll hear from my students in my classroom as they search for books to read. I love to tell my students, "Yes! Right here!" every time they ask for a book.

My students LOVE to read new books!

They have favorite characters and favorite authors, just like all children. However, because my students live in a high-poverty area, they have limited access to literature at home. Most, if not all, of the books they will read will come from their classroom.

My Project

You walk into my classroom and hear an excited buzz..."What's going on?", you think to yourself. A quick scan around the room reveals that it's book shopping time. Students are gathered around the classroom library, excitedly trading books. You listen and hear snippets of conversations: "....this was a great book! Pete the Cat saved his friend-You should read it!" or "...If you want to learn about tornadoes, this is the book for you! Did you know...?" Later, during writer's workshop, you'll see students flipping through charts on the new easel, looking for the new adjectives they learned and want to add to their writing and feeling so proud that they independently edited their own writing.

Your donations will help fund a project that will "level the playing field" for my students.

They will have access to the same books that children in all schools, regardless of financial status, are reading. With your donation, you'll ensure that my second grade classroom remains stocked with the latest, high-interest, and engaging new books to keep my current and future students reading and learning.
