My Students

My second graders attend a Title 1 school (50% or more are low-economic status) in Silicon Valley. Recent budget cuts have left us teachers with less money to purchase classroom materials, such as books. Many of my children do not have books at home, or access to public libraries.

In second grade, we teachers start to encourage students to pick up chapter books, instead of picture books, when they book shop in the classroom library for the purpose of building stamina in reading.

My second graders often shy away from chapter books because they tend to not have pictures. My kids do get engaged when they find a chapter book with a funny character who is adventurous. This year I was introduced to a character named Flat Stanley. He is a young boy who was flattened by a bulletin board in his room, and is now 1/2 an inch thick. Because of this, Stanley is able to be placed into envelopes, and be flown all over the world to help fight crimes and solve mysteries. I read the first book in this fairly new series to my students this year-and they are now HOOKED!!! They keep asking me to buy more for the class library. Stanley is great because he teaches students about different places in the world, such as Canada, the Great Egyptian Pyramids, space, and ninjas.

My Project

I am requesting 2 copies of each title in the Flat Stanley series (13 total titles), including the newest one which was just released (a haunted house adventure) and one that will be released July of 2010 (an adventure in Mexico). Flat Stanley books are beginning chapter books that have that picture support my second graders need. There are teacher resources on Stanley's website that have inspired me to bring Stanley into my classroom as a teaching modality. Students will learn new vocabulary, encourage them to research famous places in the world, and can make their own Flat Stanley which can be sent to classrooms all over the world as a project where students can request items back from the classrooms to learn more about other areas. We did this project for another classroom this year, and I want to expand the project for my class next year as well.

If you help to bring Stanley into my classroom this year, my students will be beyond excited about the new books in our classroom (which is why I am requesting multiple copies-to avoid fighting!!) Your donation will encourage my students to read chapter books and learn more about the world outside of their community.

Books are always a great gift to give, because they can be used for years to come.
