This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are some of the most outgoing, hardworking and loyal young adults I know. They come from various backgrounds and love showing off their culture. Regardless of the hardships they endure in their home lives, my students always come into the classroom with a positive outlook and an unmistakable desire to learn and better themselves. Many of my children are faced with responsibilities that no 10-13 year old should experience yet they still put a great amount of effort into their own education. 100 percent of the students within my school receive free or reduced lunch and many of my students struggle personally to come to class prepared with not only school materials, but clothing that follows our uniform policy. Creating a classroom environment that is inviting, safe and calm is crucial in ensuring their success and comfort within our classroom community.
My Project
Current classrooms are looking less and less like the ones you and I remember. Flexible seating has become the newest innovation in education. With flexible seating students are given the opportunity to sit in seats different than the traditional desk and chair. Students can choose from things such as bean bags, wobble seats, and ball chairs.
Flexible seating allows the classroom to become a student centered environment.
Students begin to feel empowered as they are able to chose a seat that allows them to learn in the best way. Flexible seating also encourages students to get up and move around. This ability to move is especially beneficial for students who have ADD, ADHD or those who simply struggle with sitting still for long periods of time.
One challenge of flexible seating can be the organization of the classroom, as students no longer have desks to keep their materials in. This is why I have requested the bins and pencil holders. These items will help students keep their materials organized and readily available.
As teachers, we try to adapt our classroom to the individual child while still keeping all students on a level playing field and giving each the proper attention they deserve. These new flexible seats will give students the ability to focus in their own ways and find a seating option that works best for them. I truly believe these seats will not only improve my students focus but also allow them to have a fun, creative way to sit. Thank you so much for considering my project and I hope you will want to help!!
