This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school-based occupational therapist working in Miami, FL, I work with students of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, etc. to assist in promoting fine motor skills, sensory regulation abilities, and to aid in overall classroom success. My primary group of students I work with are at the elementary school level. They are curious, hard working, loving, kind, funny and a joy to work with everyday. My students and my schools are the reason why I love my job so much!

I have created this project to discuss a sore (literally) subject regarding classroom design...seating!

Ergonomics is not a hot topic when discussing our schools. Traditional classroom chairs do not afford students with movement necessary to calm young, energetic bodies. Examples of poor ergonomics in our classrooms are commonly seen: feet swinging when seated, slouching positions, and consistent weight shifting. These chairs can cause physical harm (sore muscles, decreased circulation), and cause our students to lose focus and underperform in school.

I hope to aid in the overall success of my students by providing them with a fun and functional outlet to promote movement throughout the school day without disrupting structured learning time.

My Project

Alternative seating is a healthy, low-tech way to promote improved focus during school hours. Children, whether on modified or regular curriculum, are required to sit for hours on end and are expected to learn. Children need movement! These alternative, flexible seating methods are a discreet way to get kids to focus while satisfying their wiggling and fidgeting needs. Alternative seating options also provide for improved posture support needed to promote comfort while sitting for long periods of time. Poor posture over extended periods of time can cause pain, discomfort, and fleeting attention throughout the day.

I have requested the following items for my students:

Yoga ball chairs: these chairs (that I have ordered in two sizes) are a great way to promote improved posture, arousal level, and sustained attention while participating in structured learning time.

Jellyfish chairs: similar to the yoga ball chairs, the jellyfish chairs are another great option for promoting healthy posture, and can be more beneficial for younger children. These chairs also take up less room in the classroom setting, allowing for more children to use them at once without taking up precious classroom space.

Wiggle cushions: Both disc and wedge wiggle (or Move 'N Sit) cushions promote healthy wiggling opportunities for fidgety bottoms. These equipment pieces allow for children to move discreetly throughout the day!

Chair fidgets: These bands are wonderful for children with busy feet! They provide for the proprioception needed to keep children's feet quiet, yet satisfied, so they can continue to pay attention in class.
