My Students

My students attend a public high school in a rural area of eastern North Carolina. Despite our small town, my students represent a diverse population, from various back grounds, with a variety of needs.

Our school demographic includes high needs and poverty, but my students have a desire to learn and better themselves that inspires me daily.

Providing a learning environment that makes my students comfortable and meets a wide variety of learning needs is vital to helping them succeed.

My Project

Providing a collaborative, comfortable environment for students is vital to educational success. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they complete their work. Choice creates a stronger desire to learn.

Imagine a classroom with students seated comfortably around the room, learning collaboratively, rather than seated formally at desks.

My students currently choose to sit on the floor, on stools and on the one yoga ball I have provided for them. They frequently group themselves for collaborative work around tables and on the floor to find seating comfortable for them. The opportunity to provide them with additional options would be delightful.

Additional yoga balls allow students an alternative seating option both at and away from a desk. This option is specifically advantageous to students who struggle to sit still in a traditional chair. Camping chairs also provide a more comfortable seat and allow for easy collaboration during group work. Lastly, clipboards allow students to take their desk with them wherever they choose to sit. All of these items can be easily stored and are light weight.

I have seen first hand how advantageous flexible seating is to the learning environment in my classroom. I cannot wait to provide my students with additional options.
