My Students

I teach in a neighborhood school at the 4/5th grade level. My students are warm and respectful towards one another, and are very open to building their community by working together each day. They look to one another as they discuss topics in our classroom, drawing ideas from their peers and holding each other accountable to these ideas and reasoning. They constantly amaze me with their insights, and ability to argue their own point of view. They are maturing quickly, and ready to be responsible for their own learning. They are our leaders of tomorrow!

My Project

Our Reading and Writing curriculum is based on building a community of learners within the classroom. I have found that students are more able to engage in discussions with each other when they are in closer proximity to each other. Our lessons are often held on our floor carpet, where students can easily turn and talk teach each other, or hear a student share their thoughts with the whole group. Unfortunately, many of my students growing bodies have difficulty sitting still on the floor.

Back Jack chairs will give my students support while they sit at our groups, so that they can better focus on the discussions.

As students focus on each other's responses, they build their own thinking. Through our discussions, they can continue to grow our community of learners. Additionally, the chairs are light, so students can rearrange the seating environment when necessary. Back Jack chairs will unobtrusively add to our environment while growing our community.
