Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching at PS 155 for 21 years. It is a Title I school with 100 percent free lunch for our students who all fall below the poverty line. These 21 years have been the best of my life. My students have taught me much more than I could have ever taught them in a lifetime! They’ve taught me to never give up no matter how difficult your life may be and to love unconditionally —because we all deserve that!

All of my stars are in a self-contained special education classroom for students who are differently-abled and who speak Spanish as their first language.

This year in particular they have taught me that every child can learn and succeed! They have re-instilled my passion and love for teaching students who may have given up on themselves in the past. We have taught each other that we will never give up on each other. We are now family forever and I’ve guaranteed they know where to find me should they need help through middle and high school.

My Project

My students are so very unique in every way! Not only are they creative, outside-the-box thinkers, but they are also teaching me to solve problems in ways I’ve never imagined.

That being said, why should they be forced to sit in rows on the carpet for every mini-lesson, the same way we did in 1975?

In this project, I’ve chosen ball-seating as well as large pillow seating so that my creative thinkers can also choose the way they sit. They can choose seating that will be the most beneficial to their learning.

I truly believe if students are comfortable and in the position to learn that best matches their learning style, their creativity and intelligence will flourish!
