My Students

My 17 energetic first graders walk into our classroom each morning excited to learn, ready for what is in store for them. I teach in a Title I school in Newark, NJ where all students receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch.

Despite many hardships, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school to achieve success.

We begin each day with our school pledge; encouraging students to be ready, respectful, and responsible each day. Then we have morning meeting, where students share something that makes them special, or something that makes them proud. I want my students to know that I believe in them and care about them.

My Project

My students love books. We end each school day with a read aloud. My hope is that my students see themselves in many of the books we read together and learn about empathy, persistence, and growth mindset. So many of my students LOVE to read independently in our classroom library, but may not have quality literature at home. I want to show my students they are cared for and loved, and that there are people outside of our school community as well who are invested in their lives.

Each of my 17 students would love to take home their very own book over the holiday season.

With this book donation, each one of my kids will have their very own book to unwrap and bring home. I will wrap all the books ahead of time and place the students' names on the front of each package. They will unwrap their books on the last day of school before winter break. I know this surprise will impact them in positive ways!
