Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Costumes, props, and puppets bring stories to life. We just received a donation of a sewing machine, but we don't have any thread or notions!

My students attend a Title I school, with over 90% receiving free or reduced lunch.

Though they face hardships, they are always giving to others. Many volunteer or work part-time jobs to support their families. The majority of graduates are set to be the first person in their families to attend college!

My Project

My students are designing costumes and props for upcoming productions. Some are silly, some are serious. All the plays they are working on are infused with questions about justice and doing the right thing. These supplies of scissors, thread, sewing templates, fabric, and elastic will help my students learn the valuable skill of sewing and give them a chance to create fabulous shows that will impact the community. Two of my classes are developing puppet shows for elementary schools in the neighborhood to creatively and safely discuss tough issues like obesity, bullying, violence, drugs, and stranger danger. They will use Donors Choose supplies of felt, googly eyes, and fabric glue to sew original puppets.

This project will not only touch the lives of my students, preparing them for college and beyond, but will reach hundreds of elementary school students.

This project will lead to a safer, healthier community.
