Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students attend a title I school, meaning 100% of students are living below the poverty line. 33% of students are English language learners and 36% of students are students with disabilities. Our school, despite excessive budget cuts, has continued to fund the arts through its personnel. We have two visual arts teachers, a graphic design teacher, a dance, theater and music teacher. Students come to our school and value the arts because of its therapeutic and expressive qualities.

Students in my class this year and are working on sculpture and portfolio development. We are in need of the necessary materials to creat advanced projects including casts and molds. Students also will explore color and soft 2 dimensional materials through the use of oil pastels and specialized drawing paper.

In Their Own Words

We want to try something new! Building is our favorite thing to do and we are ready to try out new materials. We've used plaster and wire to create masks, cardboard and matte board to create relief sculptures and air dry clay to create sculptures in miniature. We are excited to use these new materials to make colorful drawings and molds of our hands!

I will work with the charter school students in our building and teach them how to use the materials to create small sculptures. We also want to have a show of all of our artwork for our families and parents at the end of the project to show them our creations.

This project is important cause it keeps us focused. Lots of kids start to miss class and school when things seem boring. Engaging our classmates is an awesome way to keep them motivated and focused on what's important- graduation and their education. We will also motivate others with a show.
