My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners at District 20 Pre-K in Brooklyn, NY! My students have just begun their educational journey, and some of them could use a little extra support. Many of my students are in the “pre-writing” stage of learning how to write, meaning they are just beginning to make distinctive marks on their paper which are approximate versions of letters. Some students are not yet able to create any purposeful marks just yet. To help my students develop their writing abilities, they need to strengthen the muscles in their hands (this makes creating the lines and shapes in letters easier). Squeezing and rolling play dough is a great way to strengthen the muscles in the hands, however this year I have a student with a wheat allergy, which is an ingredient in most playdoughs. I am looking for donations to buy wheat-free play dough so my students can safely engage with this classic art material.

My Project

Our class uses play-dough in our art center all year long! Students use their imaginations to create people, animals, homes, pizzas, and cookies! They also use the muscles in their hands (fine motor muscles) to squeeze, roll, and manipulate the play dough. Building these muscles will help students to better hold their pencils, and to create the lines and shapes found in letters. While we typically use regular play dough in our classroom, this year I have a student with an allergy to wheat. Having allergy-friendly art supplies will give all of my students the opportunity to engage with a classic learning activity in a safe and meaningful way.
