Sculpt My Script

My students need the following art supplies, including paint, tape, glue sticks and a gluegun, to help sculpt characters from original scripts they are writing to make their characters and puppets come alive on stage.

My Students

Everyday, my students get told that art and theater is just a waste of time, by their parents, their peers, and by budget cuts. My students are ready to tell people that they can and will do art and theater and they are ready to show everyone that it's not a waste of time.

Most of my students have never had any experience with Theater.

They are "stuck" in the class by their counselor. Many are special needs students. They cannot stay after-school for rehearsals. Their parents don't see the point in them wasting their time with the arts. Last semester, I challenged them to put on a play. They learned to sword fight, make giant puppets, memorize lines and make characters come alive. They had the time of their lives coming together as a team and putting on a show. Their confidence levels soared; their reading and writing abilities went way up. They were interested in what they were ding and had a reason to come to school. They are truly fired up to write a script, make puppets, and take their show on the road this semester.

My Project

The resources we are asking for are the least expensive way to create character puppets from the scripts the students are writing. The will be formed out of mostly paper mache sculpting and scrap materials. The masking tape will be used to help in the sculpting process by adding paper in areas that need it. The glue and glue guns will be used to fasten materials and details to costumes for the puppets. The acrylic paint and brushes will be used to give color and life to the finished puppets. The students will be using Internet resources as well to help them in the construction and function of the puppets. The students will learn to write original stories and tales and create original characters that they can interact with and see come to life. This kind of activity boosts confidence levels, creativity and thinking skills. They will use math to measure, English and Foreign Language to tell the story, movement, balance and dexterity to manipulate and tell stories. They will ultimately learn to follow a project through from start to finish and be a part of a team of players who inspire others with their art.

This project is important because so man people have told them they can't do it and I know that they can.

They want to create and share with others and that kind of desire is important to foster in everyone.
