My Students

My students are overage middle schoolers that travel across town to an inner-city behavioral program to receive extra support from small class sizes, mentoring, and coaching. Many have difficulties finding positive coping skills and regulating their social-emotional selves in and out of the classroom. Many have diagnosed learning differences in the form of IEPs. My students demographic is 100% African American, and 100% of them receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students come from impoverished communities and many have experienced trauma that has impacted their educational progress.

Our faculty recognizes how ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, affect student development. As a result, our students are treated with extra compassion and care.

My Project

In my classroom, my students experience design challenges that have applicable solutions. I would like to create a screen printing project where my students can print wearable objects including t-shirts and tote bags. They will use technological processes to create an image and practice engineering skills by creating a stencil, transferring their image to a screen, and hand printing it with ink and squeegees. Students will learn how to become their own manufacturers of products similar to the ones they see in their everyday lives.

Donors will help us acquire the necessary supplies for my students to make unique imagery and act as inventors, fabricators, artists, and designers in the classroom.

They need screen printing supplies in order to make functional objects and practice business skills by fundraising and selling their artwork. Projects with relevance and personal meaning increase my student engagement and therefore, their academic and creative success in school.
