Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although the school year has not begun yet, I am anticipating having another very curious and interesting group of students.

Now that we know that we are returning to school in a distance learning setting, I am looking ahead at how I need to adapt to the needs of my students.

I will have a group of curious and hard-working third graders. However, with distance learning at the forefront, keeping them challenged and motivated when they are at home will be a challenge. My students will all be expected to attend online school every day and do their best to learn and complete their assignments.

Some students will be working at home with parents to support them, some will be working from a caregiver's home, some will be working at home without parent support. Regardless of their situation, I will need to develop lessons and activities that keep them motivated and accountable from afar. One way to keep them hooked on learning is to add Scratch projects into my planning. These technology skills will motivate my students to get their work done, support their peers, address social issues, and build communication.

My Project

This year I will be teaching my students how to code with Scratch. Learning to code offers students a wonderful opportunity to problem solve, build perseverance, and communication skills. Scratch allows students to work in groups as they discuss solutions that they may face in society such as social bias. After creating a program that addresses and presents a solution to their social issue, they will then be able to print their program in color. Having their program in a color, printed form will allow them to better present their project to their classmates.
