My Students

The high school students I have the privilege to work with face multiple disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, cognitive delays and sensory processing difficulties.

The students on my caseload face challenges fitting into a world that can be overstimulating to their senses and difficult for them to navigate and understand. My students learn best through the use of visual instruction and repetition.

Most of the students I work with will require supervision and support after graduation. The focus of their education is on improving self care skills to become more independent, practicing communicating their needs and wants more effectively and learning to use technology to find areas that interest and motivate them to participate in their world.

My Project

My high school students scrapbook throughout the school year to improve visual perceptual and fine motor skills. This activity is also used to improve reading and writing, reinforce monthly educational themes and learn new visual techniques to present their pictures and text. The best part of making these scrapbooks is that the students' creations become a way to share and communicate with their peers and loved ones about their school experiences.

Our class needs the Cricut Explore Air 2 to be able to wirelessly cut out their own personal graphics, titles and text for their scrapbooks.

This machine will allow the students to operate an iPad to choose and design what will be cut out and used in their layout. Students will have more creative ability with this tool and can develop more personal pages that will be more meaningful to them. To use the Explore Air 2, we will need the basic tool set, as well as extra cutting blades, adhesive mats and a scoring stylus. The Cricut Library Fonts cartridge will provide more creative options in how text will look and the Cricut Elegant Edges cartridge will provide new and different ways to frame their photos.

The Cricut Explore Air 2 will also expand our ability to create amazing photo backdrops! Our class is learning to use photography as well as technology to help them explore both vocational and leisure interests. The students create seasonal photo backdrops for the school and then take pictures of other classes in front of their murals. The Cricut will allow us to add amazing text and more visual interest to their creations.
