Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students with severe and multiple disabilities want to learn more about the world in which they live, but they need the tools and materials to help them explore!

The students that I teach attend a program for students with severe and multiple disabilities in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City.

They receive instruction within a self-contained 12:1:4 classroom setting and due to many issues with accessibility my students spend much of their school day within the classroom unable to go to the computer lab, playground, and/or gym. My students are both ambulatory and non-ambulatory and largely non-verbal. Further, my students have a wide range of low-incidence disabilities that include but are not limited to: global developmental delay, cerebral palsy, vision impairments, speech and language impairments, and seizure disorder. The students are K-2 and display an undeniable curiosity and desire to learn about the world in which they live.

My Project

My students with multiple disabilities need multi-sensory instructional materials to begin a special science cart. These materials include but are not limited to: a big screen microscope (with a screen large enough that all students will be able to participate), a “bug vacuum” (so students can experience the thrill of catching and observing their own insect specimen), Science Kits that range from “specimen centers” (for actual representations of feathers and fossils) to “discovery kits” that will allow my students to discover scientific phenomena such as “magnetism” and “sink and float,” and finally a collection of age-appropriate and accessible texts (“Five Senses,” “Growing Things, “Food and Nutrition”) as well as science manipulatives (safety goggles, shatterproof safety mirrors) so that my students experience science in a myriad of ways.

In order to expand my students school experience I am beginning a science cart in collaboration with other 12:1:4 classroom teachers.

The variation in experience that these materials will provide are not only important to the students that I teach, but will be important to a multitude of students for many years to come.
