Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Science is a subject that is constantly changing. Many of the newer advances in science are not in any textbook and can not be easily described through writing. Most of my students receive free lunch, and come in with very low skills, including about 30% of our students receiving special education services. The Internet can provide these students with new information in a way that is current and dynamic. Accessing the Internet in a school with limited supplies is one of the problems of any classroom, especially one that wants to incorporate current ideas. These students deserve access to technology.

Chemistry is a very abstract subject. Many of the topics that we cover have real life applications, but the science is on an extremely small scale. It is incredibly hard to visualize the matter involved in science due to the small scale and the often complex structures that are involved. Digital images provide students with a clearer idea of what we are talking about. There are lots of interesting videos and pictures that present the chemistry material in an interactive and dynamic way that would not be possible in a traditional classroom. With limited access to this, students are left trying to imagine things that they have never experienced. Thinking about chemistry is a difficult task that most adults probably struggled with themselves in high school. Now ask a student who receives special education services to think about ideas as abstract as an atom. This will surely be a struggle, and every effort should be made to help support these students.

An LCD projector would be an extremely helpful tool in helping students better understand what we are talking about. Students could watch the atoms involved in a chemical reaction break apart and recombine as something new as they balance that same equation. Imagine a chemistry room where students can build their own molecules and then see them in 3-D. These students will have images to go with text. They will see inside chemical reactions to what the atoms are doing. Whether or not these students pursue science when they leave high school, they will have had access to technology that will enable them to compete with their peers.

Technology is far too scarce in my school. One piece of digital equipment can help my students by making chemistry visual, interactive and tangible. You can feel confident that you are giving students a tool that will be used daily and that will help them access old ideas in a new way. In addition, this will open students up to the changing technology that is so important to science. You will make it possible for my students to enter college with relevant and important science skills.
