A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are reflective, inquisitive, and charismatic and they love to explore the world of science! All 92 of my 3rd grade students benefit from over 60 minutes of hands-on science investigative per day in our neighborhood school on Chicago's northwest side.
I am a passionate educator and my science students are incredibly amazing and their curiosity is contagious!
The Next Generation Science Standards are paving the way for my students to go way beyond "Reading to Learn." My students are actively engaged in the Science and Engineering Practices, yet each of the three classes of science that I teach daily are overcrowded.
I know that my students would greatly benefit from more flexible seating so that there is more space within the classroom for them to ask questions, define problems, plan & carry out investigations, analyze & interpret data, construct explanations and design solutions just like scientists and engineers in the 'real world'.
As their teacher and advocate, I understand that every child learns differently, so it is my aim to create a flexible and open learning space where they will have the best exploration environment possible with plenty of room for them to grow as scientists!
My Project
I teach science to 92 3rd Graders each day. My students would benefit from flexible seating that would give them choice and space to explore science in ways that allow them to think from a different perspective. Stools, floor pillows and small rugs for group work are tools that will allow my students the freedom to investigate my Next Generation Science lessons with extra space for creativity when problem solving together. I have created an outdoor theme for my students that has truly motivated them to learn about science in an urban school setting.
Traditional desks are always an option, but the donations for this project will greatly improve my instruction because this flexibility will allow my urban students to be more engaged and collaborative as they work in our overcrowded classroom.
I have seen the benefits of using flexible seating with many diverse groups of students and I believe that my project will make a positive difference in our learning experience.
