Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year will be my 5th year at the same Title I middle school and I can't see myself anywhere else, because of the students. Our school's population is highly diverse, and many face the obstacles of poverty - roughly 90% are minority students and 90% receive free/reduced-price lunch. Our school is big part of the community, where families take great pride in the successes of their children, our students.

They are students who deserve the chance to explore and engage in authentic learning experiences.

These kids show up at school, despite whatever struggles they may be facing, and take on the academic world. They are full of energy and enthusiasm waiting to be channeled, and I am lucky to work with them.

My Project

Utah has finally updated their core standards, modeled after the NGSS. Our new science curriculum means a more authentic, constructionist approach to learning. It also means that we need new materials, more than a school budget can provide, to make sure that no investigation opportunities are missed.

My hope is that through these investigations some of my students will be inspired to pursue careers in STEM; and all of my students will begin a journey to being informed, curious citizens, and critical consumers.

They will be geneticists when they investigate inheritance with Wisconsin Fast Plants. They will be medical professionals when they learn about structure, function, and systems through dissection of Carolina Perfect Solution Frogs. With the Carolina air quality survey kit the students will get a chance to be concerned, informed community members when they test air quality throughout the year, collecting and analyzing hard data about the consequences of our winter inversions. They will be engineers of the future when they explore green energy with the Power House Kit. They will be evolutionary biologists when they use the Changes Over Time kit to identify patterns of structure and development in all species.

My students also need basic supplies, notebooks, glue sticks, and pencils, to record data and observations and keep their information organized. The book Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions will help me better facilitate the inquiry necessary to get the most out of these kits and supplies.
