My classroom this year is full of true scientists-children who are inquisitive, problem-solving, and meticulous about keeping data to help them understand the world around them. The students belong to the most diverse school in the county but yet is one of the most limited in terms of technology and resources. What my students lack in resources at this Title I school, they make up for in character and passion.
I am truly blessed to have such inspired students that understand the value of hard-work and responsibility to their community.
This is unusual to find at the middle school level, and I am grateful that my students can also inspire me to be a better educator and citizen. Thank you in advance for considering my project.
My Project
A subscription to Science World magazine to be shared in the classroom will allow my Title I students to have access to current, on level text that is highly engaging. There is online content also associated with the magazine so that we can investigate topics further and check our understanding as both scientists and readers. Many of my students do not keep up with current news, nor do they have magazines sent to their home. It is my hope that by bringing this to the classroom I not only improve the nonfiction literacy skills of my students, but that I also foster a sense of excitement around receiving "mail" in the classroom that students may physically have and use later.
