Reading is "FUNdamental" in all aspects of life. That is no less true in a science classroom. These 7th Grade Students deserve to have access to non-fiction text to further their understanding of the world around them. Students are expected to read for 30 minutes nightly, but have very few choices.
My students show more dedication to their "jobs" (school) than most adults do.
These are a group of 7th grade students that attend school from 8-5 and then most stay after for extra curricular activities or study help. Then they continue to pursue knowledge and learning by completing homework. Some of my students have a commute of over an hour to get to school! These students come to school willing to learn from the minimum materials, but why should they? Such hard work should be rewarded with hands-on learning. These students deserve exposure to all the materials that their high income peers receive. My students' zip code should not dictate a a lesser learning experience. By providing these materials, students are able to have more social capital, more real-world problem solving experiences, and a greater opportunity to become inspired by the sciences.
My Project
My group of 7th Grade students this year, as well as for many years to come will benefit from having access to interesting and on-level scientific text. We have no formal library at our school, only the books on hand in teachers classrooms that they have purchased. This limits what can be done for projects, extension, and simple research in the classroom. By contributing to the project, you will help to begin the schools very first science library. It is my hope that this will continue to grow in the future as students show the benefits of reading more non-fiction text and help to convince others that we need books!
By starting a science library, students will now have access to valuable non-fiction text.
In a world where innovation and technology is constantly changing, the skills necessary to succeed are often skills taught through non-fiction reading. By helping students have access to materials now, you are inevitably building future generations of scientists and thinkers who can push our world to be a better place!
