My Students

“Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled, ‘This could change your life.'” -Helen Exley. My students love to explore and read scientific, non-fiction stories just as much as any other 4th graders.

At this point in the year, I want my students to expand their enthusiasm for reading to include non-fiction works and explore the magic in the "unlikely places" one can visit only through reading.

My students are among the most driven and eager learners I have ever encountered. I teach a population of Chinese students consisting of English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York City's Chinatown. My joyful students are eager to learn and experience new content that only these requested resources can provide. My students do not interact with the English language beyond our school. Their parents do not have the language skills to ask them questions about their reading and thereby reinforce lessons learned in school. During the school day, it is essential that my students are motivated to read and utilize reading strategies at home. This can only occur if students love reading and imagining at an early age so they develop a passion to learn and explore.

My Project

It is my hope that I will be able to use these requested scientific texts in the Listening Center reading activities. Compared to a novel, non-fiction picture books use only a few words to express an idea. At that point, it is up to the reader to form a conclusion after only a few pages. Picture books are a great way to build and implement students' reading strategies daily. I have also requested multiple copies of a couple of Gail Gibbon’s most celebrated texts. It is my hope that students will be able to listen together, then work and read in small groups to better understand these texts. Small group work, bears fruitful discussion and allows each student to interact with the text.

I teach at a Title 1 school, meaning that nearly all of my students live below the nation-wide poverty line.

Beyond the classroom, my students rarely interact with scientific and informational texts. These new resources would excite the students' naturally inquisitive minds and motivate them to explore topics beyond my explicit teachings. Please consider donating to our classroom!
