My Students

My students are the 7th and 8th grade middle school kids in a K-8 school in Queens. A diverse group of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, they include all academic levels, students with disabilities, and ICT classes. Ranging in age from 11 to 14, many of them struggle with science and math concepts. They do best with hands on activities that support what they read about in texts.

They are young adults striving to be the best science students they can be.

My Project

Each year my students learn about density and how to calculate it for both regular and irregular objects. They do really well with blocks and normal shaped objects like cubes but they struggle with calculating density for irregularly shaped objects such as rocks and minerals.

Graduated cylinders are the best way to calculate the density for objects when volume is not determined using a ruler.

Actually seeing objects displace water in the tube also helps the students really comprehend what volume is and how it relates to density.

I am hoping to get a set for each of my 9 groups to use while we learn this important scientific skill. Density relates to several of the units we cover in middle school including weather, plate tectonics, and physical science. It is a concept that the students will also need to understand for both high school and college level science classes.
