it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students come into school with a desire learn but often lacking executive functioning skills that are required for success in science. These missing skills often mask a student's true ability to learn content in class.
Many students do not have their own notebooks, binders, pens or pencils that they bring to school due to missing routines and systems to keep track of their materials needed for class.
Often times, they use valuable learning time to find notes or other resources, locate a pen or pencil, and focus on organizational details rather than the lesson itself. We have seen students use one single notebook for all 7 of their classes, we've opened backpacks with students to see crumpled up handouts they've received from the start of the school year in no particular order, and find so many of our students frustrated when they cannot find something and don't correlate this to academic success.
The materials requested in this project include student binders, paper, pens, pencils, tab dividers, pocket folders, and pencil pouches. These items will help students stay organized in class, be able to keep thorough notes, records, and class materials/assessments, thus allowing them to stay engaged and learning while in the classroom. We plan to assist students in the organizational systems we set up and utilize daily in our science class, and also encourage students to take these skills to other classes in order to make their own academic futures brighter in their college and careers!
