Scientific Exploration

My Students

The students that I have the privilege of teaching have so much excitement for learning. Each day these students come to school with a desire to learn and gain as much knowledge as they can.

I would like to share with you one such example of this desire to learn.

This year, on the day after we had used microscopes for the first time in class, I had a student come in before school started with some of their friends, many of whom I do not directly teach, and ask to use the microscopes again. They quickly got the microscope set up, and excitedly showed their friends what they had discovered in class. Then all of them spent the remaining time before school started, finding various items, including their own hair to look at and explore with the microscope. This student had a great desire to learn and wanted to share this opportunity to learn with their friends.

Many of my students have a similar excitement and as their science teacher, I want to provide them with as many opportunities I can to help them explore and understand the world around them.

My Project

The grow lights will be added to my classroom greenhouse as we plan on creating individual terrariums while students learn about how organisms interact within an ecosystem.

The headphones and zipper bags will be used as a class set for students to be able to move at an individual pace throughout some instruction when they are working on their own.

The clipboards will be a class set that students will use when instruction takes students outdoors, as when my eighth grade students make observations on ecological concepts, and when my seventh graders will be outside gathering information for geology or physics.

The card stock and construction paper will be used for students to create final versions of various projects in class. Some of these projects include creating posters on natural resources in eighth grade, or posters of organelles in seventh grade.

In both grades, students will be learning about physics and gaining an understanding of force or energy. In doing so, one of the projects I would like for students to do is create a track to test the concepts they are learning and rolling various weights of balls down the tracks. When used in combination with some of the tennis balls I already have, the track, lacrosse balls, and plastic baseballs, will help students experiment with force and energy.

Overall, these materials will help my students to gain a more enriching learning experience.
