My high school is a Title I school with a high population of English Language Learners (39% as opposed to the state average of 25%). The biology sheltered students are grade 10, but the average reading level is at least 2 years behind. The greatest challenge for our student population is the ability to analyze and self-correct their own writing. Often, the students will be faced with a difficult prompt and give up rather than attempt to write more than they feel confident to submit. This creates a roadblock in building their vocabulary and their self-esteem as writers in science. In order to enhance the writing process, I would like to scan in their own work and show the classes writing samples from their peers. As a class, these samples can be animated in a program such as PowerPoint to show the impact of word order, tense, and sentence structure. In addition, the format of a science fair report and how to appropriately submit student-generated diagrams could be displayed using this technology. The resources needed are a monochrome laser scanner and extra toner cartridge that can duplex for easy access to student work. In addition to importing images for whole-class instruction, students can copy their work and have a peer edit directly on the copied material. When students can see their own work and the work of their peers reinforced via peer-editing, they have exponentially more room for growth as writers in science. With your donation, you can assist in the powerful learning process that self-assessing and peer editing allows. Students will see their writing samples on slide shows at the beginning and the end of the year, as well as throughout their learning cycle, to see their growth as writers and as science explorers. The materials asked for here have high inventory impact, as all the student work can be saved in electronic format for their own portfolios. This can empower the students to see their own growth and encourage them to continue their development as English Language Learners.
