Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

After they finish learning about space, our fifth graders will become experts on air and water along with chemical reactions in the remaining part of the year. These topics may not initially sound exciting, but once we start the hands-on experiments, students are fully engaged.

They will explore salt water versus fresh water, make it rain by creating hot and cold atmospheres around various temperatures of the hydrosphere, try to change copper to gold, make various types of putty and slime, and make models to show their understanding of the movement of objects in space.

Our chemistry unit is always a favorite with the students as they make baggies explode due to gas pressure (baking soda and vinegar), they mix substances to get a reaction and create something new, and they explore the methods of the alchemists of the past. Students also get a firm grasp of the interactions between the atmosphere and hydrosphere when they do experiments like putting together four different combinations of water bottles with hot (red) and cold (blue) to see which combination makes it rain. They see the difference between when salt water and fresh water evaporate, and they track a drop of water as it travels through the various states of matter.

While I have many of the supplies I need, these items, plates, baggies, dish soap, salt, food coloring, sticky tack, tablecloths, a cutting board set, a globe, balloons, tissue paper, and straws, will round out the list. Since I teach all grade levels--UTK through fifth grade--it can get rather expensive very quickly, so I appreciate your support with the purchase of consumables that I need every year. Thank you!
