My students need highlighters for science vocabulary and dry erase markers to practice writing chemistry equations.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Wein's classroom raised $157

My Students
Chemistry is a class where I ask students to take what they see in the world and explain it with pictures of structures that they cannot see. Furthermore, they must then verbalize these pictures with challenging scientific vocabulary.
I work at a visual and performing arts school.
Ninety-eight percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch, as they come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are remarkably talented artists, dancers, musicians, and performers, yet most are not (initially) excited when entering a science classroom. I want to prepare them for the world by challenging them to think critically about the world around them, pushing them to persevere through challenges, and inspiring them to take action within their own communities. Having a strong science and critical thinking education could open many doors for my students, and I hope that by taking this class, I can provide greater opportunities for my students' futures.
My Project
Highlighters are essential for our science vocabulary. Students keep a composition notebook with all their notes, labs, and projects. They must be able to highlight important vocabulary terms and concepts to provide a way of finding the correct terminology to use with ease.
We are constantly using white boards. We use them to draw a diagram of a chemical reaction from a particle perspective. We use them to write and correct chemical formulas. We use them to practice balancing chemical formulas. We use them to practice equations and draw structures. There is an endless need for dry erase markers, and we are currently struggling with few markers, many of which are too old to see the writing well from a distance. The students love practicing problems at the board and learn so much from supporting and correcting each other in the process. They would be so grateful to have new markers for the classroom.
We live in a world where science has become this feared subject because it is presumed to be the most difficult.
One of my goals as a chemistry teacher is to attempt to dispel that fear of science and make it accessible to students. I cannot do that without appropriate supplies. We have a great need in this country for people with science expertise, and I want to at least open that door as a possible future for my students. Please help me help them have more opportunities in life.
