I am a first grade teacher and teach a variety of subject matter from reading/math to science and social studies. The school that I teach in is a Title I school whose students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, many of whom do not speak English at home. These elementary students also tend to come from single parent homes, have grandparents raising them or are in financial need. Bringing more and more science into my classroom is very beneficial to my students, but I find it very hard to do so when the funds are not available, as our school budget this year was cut drastically. As a teacher, I spend a lot of my own money buying basic supplies (crayons, paper, pencils, glue sticks) and do not have the funds to buy science kits for students to use and learn from. My students are fascinated with learning and exploration. I would like to teach my students about nature, a life cycle of an insect, and have the students get to see first hand (up close and personal) how a lady bug and a praying mantis go from an egg to these insects. I would also like to allow my students to grow and watch plants come alive from around the world, that they would not get the chance to see. I would also like to teach my students more about weather and sink/float exploration. Students will be able to understand and grasp concepts with these hands on learning tools. The main reason I am asking for these items is that many of my students would not get to experience these types of experiments/activities outside of the classroom. So I feel that it is my duty to bring experiences into the classroom to help my students learn, understand and experience things that are around them. My students need the variety of life cycle supplies, such as 1 lady bug habitat(that contains lady bug larva), 1apraying mantis life cycle kit, 1 sensory dome (that will grow plants from around the world, 1 weather exploration tub and 1 sink/float exploration.
