Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science needs to maintain an integral and growing part of daily living in the 21st century. Students need to effectively take ownership for learning and develop the practical and critical thinking skills necessary to better understand the world around them.

Most of the students in my class are English language learners who have low-income families.

They come from hardworking families. It is a low performing school, but we have been improving the past few years. The students in my class love being in school everyday and I love teaching them. We are fortunate to have some basic science equipment in our classroom, but are missing some more expensive items. Our school has been focusing on language arts and math the past several years, but have just taught the minimum in science. Fortunately, this year our principal is committed to make time for science and I want to make the most of it for my students. They are so excited to learn science this year and I am so excited to teach it.

My Project

Students will become comfortable using a microscope. They will ALL be able to see different slides on the microscope because we already have a camera that can attach to the microscope that can then project to a big screen. The microscope we want has two features: one to be able to magnify a slide 400x and the other is to place an object such as a rock under the microscope to magnify it. The GPS handheld device will be used as an introduction to a technology that surrounds them in their daily lives. Students will learn how a GPS device helps to guide cars and cabs, trucks and trains, sailing boats and ships, airplanes and even other satellites. They will be asked to design a system that incorporates GPS device. They will learn that police municipal services, surveyors, engineers, farmers, zoologists, rescue teams and many other professions depend on these handheld devices to help them in their daily work

Your donation to this project will help students learn how to use scientific tools so they will gain a set of highly desirable skills for the future employment in business, industry and government.

Even though the students in my class come from low-income families, they are not bound to a future of being in a low-income family. By gaining this new skill set, students in my class will be well rounded students and will have the confidence to become important future leaders.
