My Students

Do you remember waiting with anticipation to actually do a science experiment, only to be told there were not enough materials to complete it? I try to make sure my students have the opportunity to do the experiments they read about in their textbook. The "doing" is what makes science come alive.

My students are hard-working and amazing.

They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone supplies. Most of my students do not have the resources to support buying extra science supplies. Our school does not have the money to buy supplies either. We work hard to make sure that our students get the same experience as those students at more affluent schools. We work hard to level the playing field for these wonderful kids. I try to build their love of science by providing fun and engaging hands-on lessons. I want my students to experience the joy of making a hypothesis and testing it out.

My Project

The motors I have requested will be used to build working cars. We will use our knowledge of circuits to build a working car and test out different ways of wiring it. We will investigate different ways to make the car go faster and slower. The students will be able to take their car home and show their families what they have learned about electricity and circuits. The lamps I have requested will be used to investigate the different kinds of circuits. Students will be able to build a circuit from a diagram. Students will learn how to wire in both series and parallel. Students will investigate how to make the lights grow dimmer or brighter. Being able to perform these types of experiments will help the children retain the science learning.

Hands-on science has been proven time and again to be the best way to teach science.

Actually performing experiments makes the scientific concepts become real to the student. These types of activities help the students feel confident in science and foster a life-long love of the subject. Building confidence in the subject early on will encourage the students to continue to take challenging curriculum in high school.
