Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A day in my classroom is very hands on. Through project-based learning we have been able to integrate not only our science curriculum, but also our science curriculum as well into our regular reading, writing, and mathematics. By the time Fridays approach my students know something fun will happen.
My elementary school is one of the largest in our county (over 2,000 students).
I am one of 13 second grade teachers. Since we often teach the same topic at the same time, I do not always have access to the books or technology I need in order to complete certain projects with my students. This past year we made ice cream when we were learning about solids and liquids. We used a computer lab to research certain animals when we were learning about life cycles. But, what if they could have read about them with books in our own classroom? What if they could have researched right there in our room during independent reading? When we learned about Space and the Moon maybe we wouldn't have to all watch a video whole group. Maybe we could have done rotations. I love to work in small groups and so do my students. Having these materials would allow not only my students to work in small groups, but also me to teach in small groups all while incorporating technology - even in math and reading!
My Project
My vision for these resources is to have them used in a myriad of ways. It is my hope that the Kindles can be used during reading for either buddy reading or as an audio source to have books read to them (for students who are still struggling or haven't quite yet learned English).
In Science it is my hope that the students can use the books on the Kindle for non-fiction research (we do Sticky Note research). They can also use the iPad as an extra internet source. The books I have requested are all science books that completely tie into my curriculum standards. They can be tied into our reading and writing standards (informational, poetry, mentor sentences, etc.) throughout the entire year.
I would also like to use the iPad to teach with my math small group and allow them to do some hands on technology with me using some apps. Plus, using the books I have requested we can relate some of our word problems to actual facts we learn.
By having a project like this funded it will allow me to teach in a way I never have before.
I have only dreamed about this amount of technology at once with in my classroom. It will take some time to teach my students to use it. However, it will be well worth it. I can only imagine the doors it will open for my students and how much more fun our projects and Fridays will become as we continue to learn about Science and Social Studies.
