Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Third graders learn about volcanoes through a book? I teach third grade in a small town in the panhandle of Oklahoma. I want my students to experience the making and activity of a volcano eruption. It gets their creative juices going, and they do learn more by hands on activities than just reading information out of a book.

We have a small school district compared to the cities and an even smaller budget, especially when it comes to science. My husband and I have spent quite a bit of our own money last year, but our budget is tightening up now, too.

I'm wanting clay, paint, some paint brushes, and food coloring, for my students to make their own volcano, in small groups of no more than three people. They bring in leaves and sticks to help decorate it. I usually can get cardboard lids to set the volcano on. I can even provide the vinegar. This really brings home the concepts of volcanic activity, plus can you remember as a kid how cool was it to make that volcano explode?

You can make it possible for my students to have a hands on experience and to enjoy science class instead of preferring video games at least for the moment.
