My Students

I teach a group of THE BEST physiology and chemistry students in East Los Angeles. I really want to make this year super cool and hands for them by incorporating some great labs, especially since last year many of them just had a computer (and spotty wifi) to learn with. They deserve the most this year from us teachers, and I hope to give them as many resources as I can get.

My Project

My school supports students from the heart of East LA, which means we're rich in pride, determination, and culture, however, we could definitely use the support in funding. My students are from a community that has been impacted severely by the pandemic (academically, financially, and personally with the loss of friends and family).

Funding science for my students will mean that we can really spark a love and fascination of physiology and chemistry, while also deepening their understanding of the impact of last year on our community.

It will allow us to explore the inequities in health and medicine in communities of color and the importance of understanding the fundamentals of science to help save lives and our planet.

The supplies for this project consist of dissection and physiology lab supplies, like temperature guns for our body temperature homeostasis lab, and pulse oximeters for our heart rate lab. There are also molecular model kits for my chemistry students. I hope to use these to help students better visualize chemistry and how understanding molecules explains phenomena such as why their cell phones work and the impact of chemicals such as carbon dioxide on climate change.
