This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love science. Our favorite science activities are when we are able to dig deep into sixth grade science concepts through hands on and engaging science labs. On a typical day, we start with a quick science warm-up and then dive right into our science labs.

My students are unique because they are sixth graders in an elementary school.

They are the leaders and the innovators of our school and I want to continue to uphold this innovation and leadership in all the learning that we do. On that same note, as a sixth grade class, we are always working to raise our standards and push ourself as students in all that we do. As sixth graders in an elementary school, they are being given an extra year to build their knowledge in a variety of subjects, and science is no exception. These students love to question the world around them and push the limits set for them. Science is the perfect subject for us to be able to constructively utilize these skills, that are natural to them at this age.

My Project

As sixth graders, my students need access to materials and resources that allow them to be critical thinkers, participate in collaborative lab group work, conduct their own experiments, create their own procedures, work critically through tough concepts, and question the world around them. My students will learn a variety of different measurement and precision skills, form a hypothesis and then create matching conclusions, learn how to conduct experiments at the middle school level of rigor, and use a variety of science tools to do all of this. Through all of this, they will learn a variety of important sixth grade science concepts and skills that will be important for them to be successful in school and in the real world.

These materials(science labs including graduated cylinders, flasks, beakers, funnels, pipettes, and a hot plate) will allow my students to have access to the tools and materials they will need to conduct experiments, measure materials, and work in lab groups at any time during the day.

We will literally have all the supplies we need at our fingertips any time we need them. We will become innovators, critical thinkers, scientists, and questioners who can apply our skills whenever we see fit.
