This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This project will allow students to practice 21st century skills such as collaboration & teamwork, creativity & imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving. These skills are applicable and will help students thrive in all aspects of their lives.
The equipment and supplies requested for this project will enable 190 10th-grade students from diverse backgrounds taking Chemistry to create soap and soap companies.
I have requested blenders to create the soap and supplies including: cardstock paper, file folders, and tri-fold presentation boards.
The students will form teams of four with four unique lead roles: President, Accountant, Engineer/Design and Marketing Portfolio which includes: a business plan, lab trials, advertising, financial transactions, contact with investors e.g. pledge letters, update letters, thank you letters, and daily meeting records.
To create a soap product, students will: research procedures, run trials, and make adjustments. They will also record qualitative and quantitative results from each trial, creating 4 packaged soaps and 2 demonstration bars that will be evaluated on: soap lathering ability, texture, ability to clean smell, design, and pH.
Our students will be asked to do two public presentations, including a PowerPoint presentation to their classmates which will include items from the portfolio and their procedural choices and findings. They will do a tri-fold presentation at our Soap Fair (family, teachers, community, students will be invited). They will have their portfolios, their display, packaged soaps and demonstration soaps.
Students will also compare the last two years of the Pierce County Point in Time Count Results data for the homeless and discuss trends and observations. Students will discuss the impact of gentrification, homelessness, and the causes of homelessness. In addition to donating their soap, students will be able to write personalized letters with words of encouragement to guests at Nativity House and the YWCA.
