Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students want to learn more about the ecology of New York City and need some research tools to help them. Our school is an environmental high school with a young research program. I am trying to strengthen this research program and support our students entrance to our local science fair competition. I work with the sophomore class on developing projects related to the urban environment. Skills obtained in my course include many research techniques that will serve our students in college including reading primary literature, sampling methods, developing hypotheses, statistical analysis and preparing presentations.

We are developing an urban environmental research program and we need help to get research equipment into our students hands. Our class is working on studying the ecology of an urban park looking at the birds, insects, reptiles, vegetation, wildlife and water quality. In order to complete their projects and support the development of their research skills, we need to set up field kits for their different projects.

When students go out into the field they need to be prepared with simple yet effective field equipment. For the upcoming spring and summer seasons, we need aquatic nets to sample local ponds and chest waders so the students can get out into the water. This particular project is looking at the diversity of macroinvertebrates in various urban parks. Once collected, these organisms need to be identified and sorted using collecting bins and jars. Through exposure to various research methods, students will have the skills to expand their projects into their local communities studying biodiversity and species richness in their own backyards. Students will ask questions, collect and analyze data and present their findings at a science fair. These first hand experiences with research strengthen students critical thinking skills and help prepare them for a future in science.

With your help these students will be exposed to a unique and powerful field research opportunity. Their curiosity will be peaked and their world's expanded as they learn to explore their surroundings in a critical way. These students will be given the chance to see what college research is like and hopefully go on to pursue careers in science.
