Chimacum Middle School is in the center of the Chimacum Valley. Chimacum is a rural town with farms while nearby Irondale is a bit more suburban. Port Ludlow on the other town rounds out a major area where Chimacum Middle School students live. We are a small school with only about one hundred and seventy students in grades six, seven and eight.
Chimacum Middle School eighth graders are typical teenagers who want to be engaged in hands-on activities that help them understand what they are learning in school.
Our eighth graders may come from a small town but they have big city aspirations.
My Project
Students learn science best by doing. Our science curriculum has students learn about concepts that will make more sense to students if they can see it with their own eyes and collect data themselves, instead of reading the data out of their textbook. The light sensors will allow students to collect data to learn how light hitting the Earth at different angles affects the seasons.
Putting numbers to activities students do in class will really help my students learn physics.
The force plate will allow students to quantify pushing and pulling data as we study forces and motion!
The heart rate monitor and pulse sensor will help students monitor their heart before and after exercise as part of our introduction to a chemistry unit where students learn how food provides us the energy we need to do all the things we do.
