My Project

Over the years I have tried many different things to help my students learn to read and to love it. It has honestly been a struggle year to year and is something that I constantly ponder over and seek new ideas. I have used my summer to research the newest findings on the science of teaching reading. Not only have I learned about the process of teaching it based on scientific research but have discovered UFLI through the University of Florida. The UFLI website and manual offers many free resources to use for giving explicit and systematic instruction for phonics. It would benefit my students to be able to acquire the manual that offers teaching cues and information to go with the free resources to ensure I am provided the best instruction to grow fluent, confident readers to help them become successful at the ultimate goal of reading, comprehension. Although the UFLI Foundations manual covers decoding and phonics, it is proven that students with a solid phonological awareness and decoding ability grow in to fluent readers with great comprehension abilities. A lot of students I have taught come with limited language background, are ESOL students learning english or are even considered ESE with many learning disabilities that were newly identified or in the process of identifying. This systematic teaching practice can help students regardless of their learning abilities grow and progress as readers at the pace that is needed for them.
