My Students

"I am not a teacher, but an awakener." ~ by Robert Frost My students are inquisitive, lively children who thrive in an explorative environment. I strive to awaken the love of learning in my students through a STEAM approach combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

My students are curious 5th graders in their last year of elementary school.

They simply love hands-on science and art activities. When I can provide an opportunity to apply both science and art in one lesson, their engagement and learning is magnified.

My Project

With these materials, students will learn about the science of their internal organs while painting them on a shirt. When they put the shirts on they can tell where those organs really are inside themselves. So many students refer to their entire belly as their "stomach" and will be shocked to see that the stomach is one of many organs inside them. By painting the organs, they can be creative, express themselves, and have a memento to keep that will help them always remember how complicated their internal organs are. We will need hangers to hang up the shirts while they dry and clothes pins to keep the shirts in place. We will need a lot of paint so that each organ can have its own color. The Sharpies will help us to permanently label the organs once the paint has dried. Additionally, the STEM/STEAM books will help stimulate future project ideas to inspire my students.

The love of learning comes when students' experiences include creative, explorative, and hands-on activities.

I believe classroom learning should be engaging, enjoyable, and relevant. Integrating art with science provides students with a meaningful experience that strengthens their understanding of the scientific concepts. This project will help awaken the scientist within my students, potentially inspiring some to become future doctors or scientists in human anatomy!
